Balancing Light and Shadow: Working with the Dark Moon
Why Shadow Work?
Shadow work often gets a bad reputation because people think it’s about dredging up past mistakes or focusing on negative qualities. In reality, it's not about beating ourselves up or trying to become a "better person" by someone else's standards. It's about looking at the parts of ourselves and our lives that we want to change. What isn't working anymore? What feels heavy, restrictive, or out of alignment with who we are or who we want to be?
Shadow work helps us to bring awareness to these areas. And the dark moon, with its powerful energy for release and renewal, gives us the perfect moment to do this inner work.
A Personal Example: Defensiveness and Beliefs
In the video, I shared a personal example about defensiveness. Imagine you're in a supermarket, and you're overcharged. Immediately, you feel defensive, thinking the cashier is trying to rip you off. But upon reflection, you realize it was just a simple mistake.
Why did that defensiveness arise? What belief was behind it? Maybe it’s rooted in a belief that people often take advantage of you, or perhaps it stems from a need to protect yourself at all costs. Whatever it is, by exploring these feelings, you can start to unravel these deep-seated beliefs and decide if they’re serving you.
On the other hand, what about someone who finds it difficult to speak up in that same situation? They don’t say anything, even though they’ve been overcharged, and simply walk away. Perhaps this person’s shadow reveals a belief that they’re not worthy of being heard, or maybe they feel shame about confrontation.
A Simple Dark Moon Ritual for Release
To help release these old beliefs and obstacles, I demonstrated a simple ritual in the video. Here’s a quick rundown:
-
Identify the Belief or Obstacle: Think about something that’s no longer working for you—a belief, behavior, or obstacle that you want to release.
-
Write it Down: On a small piece of paper, write down the belief or obstacle.
-
Pour Salt Over the Paper: Sprinkle salt over the paper. As you do, visualize the salt absorbing the belief or obstacle, pulling it out of your energy.
-
Tear it Up and Let it Go: Once you feel the belief has been absorbed, tear up the paper and throw it away. Imagine the limiting belief or obstacle is leaving your life, allowing space for something new and more empowering to take its place.
Final Thoughts
Shadow work isn’t about perfection—it’s about balance. By recognizing both our light and shadow, we create harmony within ourselves. The dark moon is a reminder that just as the moon cycles through phases, so do we. There’s always a time for reflection, release, and renewal.
If you’re ready to dive deeper into your own shadow work, take advantage of the next dark moon to practice this ritual. Allow yourself to release what no longer serves you and step into the next phase of your life with clarity and balance.
