Persephone, daughter of Demeter, was gathering flowers when the earth split open beneath her feet.
Hades emerged from the underworld and pulled her down into the depths.
The earth closed. Persephone screamed.

And only one goddess heard her.

Hekate.

While the other gods remained silent — or complicit — Hekate listened.

As a liminal goddess, a guardian of thresholds, she knew a boundary had been crossed. She always knows when someone moves from one realm to another… from one identity to the next.

When Demeter searched desperately for her daughter, Hekate stepped forward.

“I heard her cries.”

Torch in hand, Hekate helped Demeter uncover the truth: Persephone was in the underworld.

But here is the part that matters most for your practice.

Hekate did not storm the underworld to rescue Persephone.
She did not pull her back into the light.

Instead, she became Persephone’s guide — walking beside her through the darkness, teaching her how to navigate it… until Persephone became Queen of the Underworld herself.

Hekate stood at the gate for both the descent and the return.
She illuminated the path — without forcing the journey.

What This Means for Your Shadow Work

When you do shadow work, you are Persephone.

You are descending into your inner underworld — the subconscious, the wounds, the rejected parts, the buried power.

And Hekate?

She’s the one who hears you when no one else does.
She doesn’t pull you out of the darkness.

She walks with you through it.

This is why so many witches feel drawn to Hekate during:

• Identity shifts

• Life transitions

• Emotional upheaval

• Periods of deep shadow work

She doesn’t promise comfort.
She promises companionship.

She doesn’t remove the darkness.

You don’t need to banish the dark.

They are initiation.

When you call on Hekate, notice what you need most:

• Torches — clarity, illumination, truth

• Keys — access, release, opening new paths

• Companionship — to be witnessed

• Guidance — through uncertainty and change

Your answer is already a message from her.

A Simple Hekate Invocation

Before shadow work, light a candle and say:

Hekate, Keeper of the Crossroads,
Guardian of the Threshold,
Holder of the Torches,
Walk with me into my depths.
Light my way — but do not pull me from the dark.
Help me see what I need to see,
Heal what is ready,
And become who I am meant to be.
I am Persephone descending.
Be my guide.

Creating a Hekate Altar for Transformation

Include:

• Three candles (the three worlds)

• Keys

• Crossroads imagery or stones

• Twilight-gathered natural items

• A journal for underworld insights

Visit this altar at liminal times — dusk, dawn, dark moon — and ask:
“What are you illuminating for me now?”

Shadow Work Prompts with Hekate

Journal with her as witness:

1. What part of myself have I been avoiding — and why?

2. What would it mean to rule my shadow instead of fearing it?

3. What threshold am I standing at right now?

4. What truth is Hekate illuminating for me?

5. What version of myself is ready to be released?

You move through seasons, too:

• Light phases — growth, action, visibility

• Underworld phases — rest, reflection, transformation

Both are sacred.

Don’t rush the descent.
