Which Witch Are You? Discover Your Perfect Magical Path

Feeling Lost in the World of Witchcraft?

I totally get it. When I first started practising witchcraft over 35 years ago, I felt completely overwhelmed. There were numerous types of magic, traditions, and practices to choose from. Where was I supposed to start?

If you're feeling the same way right now, you're not alone. The good news is that finding your witchcraft style doesn't have to be confusing. In this guide, I'm going to share what I've learned about five popular types of witchcraft to help you discover which path feels right for you.

Why Your Witchcraft Style Actually Matters

Here's something I wish someone had told me when I started: you don't need to do everything at once. Seriously, trying to practice every type of magic will just leave you feeling stressed and confused.

Think of witchcraft styles like choosing a sport or hobby. You wouldn't try to play football, basketball, tennis, and swimming all at the same time, right? You'd pick one that you enjoy and get good at it first.

The same goes for witchcraft. When you understand the different styles, you can focus on what naturally connects with you. This makes your practice feel real and exciting instead of overwhelming.

And don't worry—you're not stuck forever! Once you get comfortable with one style, you can always explore others and add them to your practice.

5 Types of Witchcraft Explained Simply

Let me break down five common witchcraft paths. As you read through these, pay attention to which one makes you feel excited or curious.

1. Green Witch 🌱

What They Do: Green witches are all about nature. They work with plants, herbs, crystals, and anything that comes from the earth.

The History: This style comes from old folk traditions in Northern Europe. Back then, people called "cunning folk" used natural materials to make healing potions, love spells, and protective charms.

Is This You? Do you love being outdoors? Do you enjoy gardening or learning about plants? Do crystals and herbs fascinate you? If yes, green witchcraft might be your thing.

2. Hedge Witch 🌌

What They Do: Hedge witches are like bridges between our world and the spirit world. They work with ancestors, spirits, dreams, and divination (predicting the future).

The History: The word "hedging" or "hedge riding" means travelling between different worlds. This practice is similar to shamanic traditions found in many indigenous cultures around the world.

Is This You? Are you interested in talking to spirits? Do you have vivid dreams that seem meaningful? Do you want to learn tarot or other divination tools? Hedge witchcraft could be your path.

3. Ceremonial Witch ✨

What They Do: Ceremonial witches love structured rituals and formal magic. They use special tools like athames (ritual knives), wands, pentacles, and chalices. They often create magical circles and call upon spirits during their ceremonies.

The History: This style comes from traditions like the Golden Dawn, Freemasonry, and Hermeticism—groups that practised organised, ceremonial magic.

Is This You? Do you like following specific steps and procedures? Do formal rituals appeal to you? Would you enjoy learning about ancient magical systems? Then, ceremonial witchcraft might resonate with you.

4. Wiccan Witch 🔮

What They Do: Wiccans follow a specific spiritual religion with set beliefs and practices. They work with deities (gods and goddesses), follow the Wiccan Rede ("harm none"), and celebrate seasonal festivals.

The History: Wicca was created by Gerald Gardner and developed further by people like Alexander Sanders. It combines ceremonial magic with nature worship and has clear rules and ethics.

Is This You? Are you looking for a spiritual path with structure and community? Do you want to worship specific deities? Would you like a practice with clear ethical guidelines? Wicca might be perfect for you.

5. Eclectic Witch 🧙‍♀️

What They Do: Eclectic witches mix and match! They take bits from different traditions and create their own unique practice. One day, they might work with herbs (green witch style), and the next day, they might do a formal ritual (ceremonial style).

The History: This is a modern approach that lets witches be creative and flexible with their practice.

Is This You? Do you hate being boxed in? Do you want the freedom to try different things? Do you like creating your own rules? Eclectic witchcraft gives you total flexibility.

Other Witchcraft Styles to Know About

These five aren't the only options! Here are a few more styles you might come across:

  • Elemental Witches: They focus on the four elements—earth, air, fire, and water—in their magic.
  • Lunar Witches: They base their practice around the moon and its different phases.

As time goes on, more and more styles keep popping up. But remember, these categories are just guides. They're meant to help you explore, not limit you.

How to Start Your Witchcraft Journey Today

Ready to begin? Here's my advice: start simple.

First, read through the five main styles above again. Which one made you the most excited? Which one sounds like something you'd actually enjoy doing regularly?

Start there. Learn the basics of that style. Try a few simple practices. See how it feels.

Your Witchcraft Path Is Waiting

After 35+ years of practising witchcraft, here's what I know for sure: there's no "wrong" path. Whether you're drawn to working with plants, connecting with spirits, performing elaborate rituals, following Wiccan traditions, or mixing everything, the right path is the one that feels right to YOU.

You don't have to put yourself in a box. Witchcraft is all about freedom and personal connection to magic. These categories are just starting points to help you find your way.

Trust your instincts. Pay attention to what excites you. Follow your curiosity. Your magical practice should feel natural and joyful, not forced or stressful.

The most important thing? Just start. Pick something that interests you and try it. You can always change direction later. Magic is a journey, not a destination.
