Grounding Yourself After Shadow Work: Hekate’s Rituals for Going Deep Without Getting Lost
When the Work Leaves You Shaky
There’s a very specific kind of exhaustion that comes after deep shadow work.
Not the kind you feel after a long day…
But the kind that feels like you’ve travelled somewhere far inside yourself—and the journey back took longer than expected.
You might feel:
-
Teary for no clear reason
-
A little spacey
-
Disconnected from your body
-
Like the ground beneath you isn’t quite steady
If you’ve ever felt this way, hear this clearly:
You didn’t do anything wrong. You went somewhere real.
Shadow work is powerful. And when you’re working with Hekate—a chthonic guide who walks the liminal spaces—it can take you deep, very quickly.
That’s part of her power.
But it also means this:
Grounding isn’t optional. It’s part of the work.
What Shadow Work Is Really About
Before we go into the practices, let’s clear something up.
Shadow work is often misunderstood.
It’s not:
-
Sitting in pain for the sake of it
-
Picking yourself apart
-
Trying to “fix” who you are
Shadow work is about removing what was never truly you.
The beliefs.
The conditioning.
The internalised stories that kept you smaller than you are.
When those begin to shift, your identity shifts too.
And that transition isn’t just mental—it’s somatic. Your nervous system feels it.
Which is why learning to hold yourself safely through the process is essential.
This is where Hekate becomes such a powerful guide.
She stands at the threshold.
She holds the torch.
She carries the keys.
But she works in the in-between spaces.
So if you’re going to walk with her into the depths…
You must stay anchored in the physical world.
How to Ground Yourself (Before, During, and After Shadow Work)
These are the practices I use and teach to ensure depth without overwhelm.
1. Create a Grounding Ritual Before You Begin
This is your anchor.
Before you open anything—your journal, your tarot, your inner world—create a moment of intentional grounding.
-
Place an image or symbol of Hekate on your altar
-
Light a black, brown, or red candle
-
Hold a grounding stone (black tourmaline or smoky quartz are ideal for beginners)
Close your eyes. Feel the weight of the stone.
Say:
I anchor into the earth. I am supported. I am safe.
Then breathe:
-
In for 4
-
Hold for 2
-
Out for 6
(The longer exhale signals safety to your nervous system.)
Call on Hekate:
Keeper of the keys, I stand at the threshold. Guide me into what I am ready to see, and keep me grounded in what is real and true.
Then begin.
2. Use a Mid-Session Anchor When Emotions Rise
Emotions are not a problem. They are movement.
But if they begin to feel overwhelming, come back into your body.
-
Place your hand where you feel the emotion most strongly
-
Apply gentle pressure
-
Speak softly to yourself
I am here. I am safe. I can slow down.
If a belief surfaces, acknowledge it:
I see you. You’re not truth—you’re something I learned. And I don’t have to carry you anymore.
And if it’s too much?
Pause.
You are allowed to come back later. Depth doesn’t require force.
3. Use Tapping to Release What Won’t Shift
When something feels stuck, this is where tapping becomes incredibly powerful.
Gently tap the side of your hand while naming what’s present:
-
This anger
-
This sadness
-
This shame
No need to analyse. Just name and tap.
The nervous system begins to regulate.
The charge softens.
Movement happens naturally.
Sometimes, what’s been held for years finally begins to release.
4. Close Every Session Properly
This step is often skipped—and it matters.
When you’re done:
Thank Hekate.
It can be simple:
-
A few words
-
A small offering
-
A drop of oil
-
A glass of water
Then eat or drink something.
This brings you back into your body and signals completion.
It closes the threshold you opened.
5. Use the Emergency Grounding Protocol
If you’ve gone too deep, too fast—come back to basics.
-
Stand up and move your body
-
Tap the side of your hand
-
Gently stroke your arms
-
Name your environment:
-
5 things you see
-
4 things you feel
-
3 things you hear
-
And if needed:
Stop the work.
For a day. A week. Longer.
Integration is part of the process.
A Word for You, If This Feels Like a Lot
If shadow work has ever felt overwhelming—or if you’ve been avoiding it because you weren’t sure how to stay safe—you’re not alone.
This work can feel like opening a door without knowing what’s waiting on the other side.
But you don’t need to be fearless.
You just need to go slowly… and learn how to support yourself as you go.
The grounding practices aren’t “extra.”
They are what make the work sustainable.
Be gentle with yourself.
Be patient.
And trust this:
Hekate will show you what you’re ready to see—not everything at once.
You are not broken.
You are becoming.
