The Wagon Hasn’t Gone Anywhere: A Letter to the Inconsistent Witch
There’s a particular kind of silence that fills a room when your altar has been untouched for weeks. Candles gather dust. Crystals sit cold. And somewhere in your chest, guilt begins to nest.
If you’re reading this with that familiar heaviness, I want you to know: you haven’t abandoned your path. You’re just human.
The spiritual world often whispers that “real witches” have daily practices, that devotion equals consistency, and that missing rituals or losing rhythm is failure. But what if that entire framework is wrong? What if the seasons of your practice are meant to ebb and flow, just like the moon? You may have been too tired to honour last month?
Today, we’re exploring why you step away—and, more importantly, how to return without shame.
Why We Step Away (And Why That’s Okay)
Let me tell you a truth few admit: most witches are inconsistent. Instagram altars and TikTok morning rituals only show the highlight reel—not the weeks of nothing that came before, nor the burnout waiting after.
Here are the three main reasons witches step away:
-
Perfectionism kills your magic.
You convince yourself a “real” ritual needs the perfect moon phase, forty-five uninterrupted minutes, exact incense, and robes you don’t own. Too high a bar leads to doing nothing. -
Overwhelm turns witchcraft into homework.
Too many books unread. Too many deities calling. Too many conflicting “must-do” practices. Sacred connection turns into constant catch-up. -
Life demands everything.
Work stress, family obligations, grief, illness, or sheer exhaustion—these are not failures of devotion. They’re life.
Your practice going dormant doesn’t mean it’s broken. It’s part of a season.
The Season of Your Soul
Trees lose their leaves in winter without judgment. Why deny ourselves the same grace?
Your spiritual practice has seasons too:
-
Spring: Exploration and growth
-
Summer: Abundance and flow
-
Autumn: Harvest and reflection
-
Winter: Rest, reset, and quiet
Winter isn’t failure. It’s part of the cycle. The Goddess doesn’t abandon the earth in dormancy. Hekate stands at the crossroads even when you’re too exhausted to light a candle. You remain connected even in silence.
Your Minimum Viable Practice: Five Ways to Start Again
Here’s the revolutionary truth: a practice doesn’t need to be grand to be sacred. Magic lives in connection, not complexity.
-
The One-Breath Practice
Before leaving bed, take a deep breath and whisper thanks to whatever feels sacred. One intentional breath. -
The Threshold Moment
Notice every doorway you pass today. Pause briefly. Acknowledge the crossing. That moment alone is witchcraft. -
The Gratitude Glance
Look at your altar—even if dusty or untouched. Say, “I see you. I’m still here.” Witnessing is enough. -
The Elemental Check-In
Pick one element each day: water (wash your hands with intention), fire (feel the sun), air (notice your breath), earth (touch a plant or soil). Circle casting isn’t required—awareness is practice. -
The Night Whisper
Before sleep, speak one honest sentence to the Divine. “I’m tired.” “Thank you.” “I’m trying.” Truth in the dark is more sacred than perfection.
Pick one, not all five. Repeat for three days. That’s your practice. That’s you back on the wagon—the wagon never left.
A Personal Note: You’re Exactly Where You Need to Be
Your current place is not a detour. Every witch experiences the falling away and the return. Shadow work includes forgiving yourself for imperfect devotion.
You are not behind. You haven’t wasted time. Even the lessons learned while away—about limits, needs, and pacing—are sacred.
Whether your last ritual was yesterday or six months ago, I see you as the witch you are now—not the one you think you should be.
If you’re ready to rebuild a sustainable, flexible practice, I’ve created a free masterclass that dives deeper into daily magic designed for real life. For ongoing support, Mystery Witch School shows how to be imperfect witches with whole hearts.
For today? Light one candle, or sit in the dark, knowing you’re not alone.
Blessed be, inconsistent witch. The crossroads are always open.
