The Sacred Fire Within
There’s something quietly radical about celebrating a Sabbat on your own.
No coven. No bonfire in a field. Just you, a candle, and the turning of the wheel.
If you’ve ever felt like you’re missing something because you practice solo, you’re not. The magic doesn’t live in the group — it lives in you. And Beltaine and Samhain are two of the most powerful times of year to remember that.
Wherever you are in the world right now, the earth is speaking.
The question is: are you pausing long enough to listen?
What This Season Is Really About
Beltaine and Samhain sit opposite each other on the Wheel of the Year — and they mirror each other beautifully.
-
In the Northern Hemisphere, Beltaine arrives in late April and early May. It’s a festival of life, fire, fertility, and creative power. The earth is bursting open — and it calls you to do the same.
-
In the Southern Hemisphere (including here in Australia), this same time marks Samhain. The veil thins. The ancestors draw close. It becomes a season of reflection, shadow work, and release.
At their core:
-
Beltaine asks: What do you want to bring into being?
-
Samhain asks: What are you ready to release or transform?
Both are sacred.
Both are necessary.
And both can be deeply powerful when practised alone.
A Simple Solo Ritual You Can Do Tonight
You don’t need elaborate tools or complex preparation.
Just:
-
A candle
-
A quiet space
-
Your presence
That’s enough.
1. Ground Yourself First
Take a few slow, deep breaths.
Imagine roots extending from your body deep into the earth. Feel the steadiness beneath you. Let your exhale be longer than your inhale.
Stay here until you feel settled.
2. Create a Circle of Light
Place your hand over your heart.
Visualise a warm light glowing there, then expanding outward:
-
To your right and left
-
In front and behind
-
Above and below
Until your entire space is gently held within it.
No complexity. Just intention.
3. Light Your Candle and Speak What You Love
-
For Beltaine: green, red, or pink
-
For Samhain: orange or deep red
As you light the flame, speak aloud:
What do you love about being a witch?
What drew you here?
What has this path given you?
Let yourself feel it.
This is where the energy begins to rise.
4. Speak the Invocation
For Beltaine:
We call upon the sacred god and goddess,
masculine and feminine, fire and earth entwined.
Bless the bloom of life, the turning of the wheel.
Awaken our hearts, lift our spirits, and open the way.
Let the sacred fire burn within and without,
balancing shadow and light, seed and harvest.
So may magic flow, here and now.
For Samhain, allow your words to shift naturally:
-
Honour the ancestors
-
Acknowledge the veil
-
Welcome, transformation and release
Let it be personal. Let it be real.
5. Sit, Reflect, and Close with Gratitude
Sit quietly with the flame.
You might:
-
Meditate
-
Journal
-
Simply observe what arises
When you feel complete:
-
Thank your guides, ancestors, or deities
-
Acknowledge the space you created
-
Gently close your ritual
Simple. Whole. Complete.
If You Want to Go Deeper
For Beltaine
-
Create a small wreath or symbolic maypole
-
Write a journal entry as if your desire has already manifested
-
Describe the feeling of it being real
For Samhain
-
Set up an ancestor altar
-
Practice divination or scrying
-
Write down what you’re ready to release
-
Explore the beliefs beneath it
If part of you is thinking, “That seems too simple to matter,” I understand.
But in over three decades of practice, I’ve found something to be true:
The most transformative moments are rarely the most elaborate.
They’re the quiet ones.
The honest ones.
The ones where you simply show up.
That willingness — that’s the magic.
And if saying “I am a witch” has ever felt flat or disconnected, try this instead:
“I love being a witch.”
Notice what happens.
There’s something about leading with love that opens the heart in a different way.
Magick is real, and you have the power to use it.
