How to Close the Identity Gap in Witchcraft and Truly Feel Like a Real Witch
There’s a quiet moment many of us know but rarely speak aloud.
You’ve been on this path for a while. You’ve lit candles. You’ve read books. You’ve cast spells. And yet, underneath it all, a small voice whispers: “But am I really one of them?”
If that sounds familiar, this is for you. Not because you’re doing anything wrong, but because that feeling has a name, a reason, and — most importantly — a way through.
The Core Teaching: Doing vs. Being
Most of us come to witchcraft thinking the journey is about learning more: more spells, more traditions, more tools. And yes, knowledge matters. But after 35 years of working with witches of all levels, I’ve seen the truth repeatedly: feeling like a “fraud” isn’t a skills gap. It’s an identity gap.
-
Doing witchcraft: The magic feels in the tools — the moon phase, the herbs, the words. You perform the ritual, then quietly wonder if it works, because deep down you doubt your legitimacy.
-
Being a witch: The tools still exist, but they are extensions of you. The magic lives in you. Your energy, your intention, and your presence carry the work — no second-guessing required.
Closing that gap isn’t about learning more. It’s about choosing who you are.
The Crossroads: A Moment of Choice
Borrowed from the Hekatean tradition, the Crossroads represents sacred possibility, not danger. It’s where the old path meets the new, where Hekate’s torch lights the way forward.
Most witches are held at the Crossroads by three invisible blocks:
-
The Apprentice Trap — believing you’re never “ready” until you learn more.
-
The Performance Wound — performing for an invisible critic, even in private.
-
The Threshold Fear — flinching at the moment of claiming your identity, because real power is both exhilarating and terrifying.
Most of us carry all three, in varying degrees.
A Simple Practice to Reclaim Your Identity
I call this the Identity Anchor. It takes ten minutes and requires no tools — though a candle or meaningful object can be a helpful focus.
Step 1 — Get Settled
Sit with your feet flat on the floor. Take a slow breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. Let your body arrive where you are.
Step 2 — See the Story Clearly
Bring to mind the voice that says you’re not real, not ready, not enough. Don’t fight it. Notice where it lives in your body. Place a hand there and say:
"I see you. I know why you’re here. And I don’t need you to protect me anymore."
Step 3 — Tap It Out
Use the fleshy edge of your palm (between the base of your little finger and wrist) and tap gently with your other hand. As you tap, say:
"Even though I’ve been holding onto the story that I’m not a real witch, I am choosing to put that story down now."
Breathe slowly, imagining the story leaving your body — not destroyed, just released.
Step 4 — Step Into Your Identity
Sit up tall. Place one hand on your heart and one on your belly. Feel your breath connecting them. Say aloud:
"I am a witch. I have always been a witch."
Repeat — not as a hope, but as a statement of fact.
Step 5 — Close the Space
Take a final breath. Notice any shifts — warmth, calm, quiet. These are signs your energy has moved. End with:
"I choose to walk forward as one."
Return to this practice often. Repetition lays down roots for lasting change.
A Personal Note from Sandra
I didn’t always feel this way, either. For years, I kept myself small — hiding my altar, softening my words, leaving myself an exit. Every time I minimised myself, I cast the wrong spell: “It’s not safe to be me.”
The moment it changed wasn’t when I learned more. It was when I finally chose — alone, in a forest, after years of following other people’s guidance — to say: “I am a witch. I have always been a witch.”
Everything after that shifted. Not because life became easy, but because I stopped arguing with myself about my truth. Your moment may look different, but it’s equally available to you — not after a course, not after years of practice. Now.
