The Witch Identity Gap: Why You Might Feel Like You're Still Waiting to Feel Like a "Real" Witch
Have you ever scrolled past someone else's altar, someone else's ritual, someone else's easy confidence, and felt a small ache in your chest? That quiet thought of, they seem to know exactly what they're doing... why don't I?
If that feeling is familiar, I want to say this gently but clearly: you're not behind. You're not missing some secret piece of information everyone else got and you didn't. What you're likely experiencing is something I've come to call the witch identity gap, and it is far more common than you'd think.
What the Witch Identity Gap Actually Is
Here's the core of it. Most of us come to witchcraft from the outside in. We start collecting: books, crystals, tarot decks, altar tools. We learn the language of the moon phases, the Sabbats, a bit of spellwork. And all of that is wonderful. It's part of the path.
But knowledge and connection are not the same thing.
You can know a hundred correspondences and still feel unsure the moment you sit down to actually practice. You can have shelves of books and still whisper to yourself, am I doing this right? That gap between learning about witchcraft and feeling like a witch isn't a sign that something is wrong with you. It's simply the space where the deeper work happens: the work of building a relationship with the craft, and with yourself.
This shows up in a few familiar ways. Maybe you feel like you're always learning but never quite landing. Maybe you compare your beginning to someone else's years of practice, forgetting that you never see the doubts and stumbles that came before their confidence. Maybe you feel frozen by how much information is out there, unsure what to even start with. Maybe your practice ebbs and flows with life, and guilt creeps in when weeks pass without a ritual. Or maybe you're simply waiting. Waiting to know enough, to have the right tools, to finally feel ready.
Here's the truth underneath all of it: confidence doesn't come before you begin. It comes from beginning.
A Practice for Closing the Gap
If any of this resonated, here are a few gentle ways to start closing that gap, not by learning more, but by practising more.
1. Start smaller than feels meaningful. You don't need an elaborate ritual to build connection. Light one candle with intention. That's enough to count.
2. Ask yourself what resonates, not what's "correct." Instead of researching the "right" way to do something, pause and notice what genuinely draws you. Your practice is allowed to look different from anyone else's.
3. Create a daily threshold. Choose one small, repeatable moment that marks the doorway between ordinary life and your craft. It might be a breath before you step outside, a moment of noticing the moon, a line in a journal. This becomes the thread that holds your practice together, even on busy weeks.
4. Let your intuition speak before you check the book. Next time you reach for a guide or reference, pause first. Ask your own inner knowing what it thinks. Then check the book. Over time, this rebuilds trust in your own instincts.
5. Practice imperfectly, on purpose. Give yourself permission to do a ritual "wrong." Skip a step, improvise a word, let it be messy. This is often where real connection sneaks in, underneath the performance of doing it correctly.
I've walked this path for over 35 years now, and I can tell you honestly: the feeling of being ready comes after you begin, not before. I still remember searching for my own footing, long before I found a coven, long before any of this felt natural. It was hard. It's hard for most of us.
So if you're in that in-between space right now, learning, longing, unsure if you're doing it "right," please hear me: that unsure feeling doesn't disqualify you from the path. It's part of walking it. You don't need to know everything. You don't need the perfect altar. You need a foundation, and a willingness to keep showing up in small, honest ways.
That's genuinely how it happens for all of us. One candle. One breath. One moment of trusting yourself a little more than yesterday.
